Over a million Middle Eastern refugees sought asylum in Europe through Greece. Suzanne Chen, a prominent figure in Athens’ Chinatown who has lived in Greece for 15 years, began to actively lobby and organize a team of Chinese migrant volunteers in Greece. They carried China-made shoes, hats, and jeans out of their wholesaling shops and ventured beyond the confines of Chinatown to help newly arrived Syrian refugees on the islands, at the borders, and in refugee camps. Suzanne’s efforts were also driven by a desire to make amends for the regret she feels over her father’s unexpected death and to win back the affection of her long-separated daughter. Facing opposition from other Chinese compatriots, non-cooperation from her Greek husband, skepticism from Western volunteers, and disagreements among her teammates about rescue methods, could the always decisive and stubborn Suzanne forge her own path?
